What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic that spans the gap left by a missing tooth or teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth — called pontics — held in place by crowns on the neighbouring teeth on either side of the gap (called abutments). Unlike a denture, a bridge is permanently cemented in place. It does not come in and out.
Why Replace a Missing Tooth?
Missing teeth affect more than your appearance. Over time, the surrounding teeth can shift into the gap, affecting your bite and making teeth harder to clean. The jawbone beneath a missing tooth also begins to resorb. Replacing missing teeth promptly helps preserve the alignment and health of your remaining teeth.
Is a Bridge Right for Me?
A bridge is a good option when the teeth on either side of the gap have healthy enough roots to support crowns, but could also benefit from re-enforcement on the top half. We'll discuss all your options — including implants— so you can make an informed decision.
What to Expect
A bridge typically requires two appointments. At the first, the supporting teeth are prepared and a digital scan or impression is taken. A temporary bridge is placed while your permanent bridge is being fabricated. At the second appointment, the permanent bridge is fitted and cemented.

Dental Implants
An dental implant and the accompanying implant crown is another option for replacing a single missing tooth — permanent, standalone, and no impact on neighbouring teeth.

Dental Hygiene Care
Your hygienist will give you special tools to clean underneath and around your bridge. Most bridges will last 10-15 years with excellent oral health care. Be sure to get regular dental cleanings to ensure tartar buildup does not compromise and damage your bridge.

Sports Guards and Night Guards
To protect your bridge from excessive force, it's important to use a custom fitted nightguard and/or sports guard, because you are asking the teeth on either side of the space to do extra work to make up for the missing tooth.
